General information
Maxalt (rizatriptan) is a headache medicine
that narrows the blood vessels around the brain. It is part of a class
of migraine medications called 5-HT agonists. Rizatriptan reduces
substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea,
sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms. Maxalt will
only treat a headache that has already begun. It will not prevent
headaches or reduce the number of attacks.
Directions
Use this medication exactly as prescribed by
your doctor. Take Maxalt only when you have a migraine. Swallow Maxalt
tablets whole with with a full glass of water, with or without food. Do
not take more than 30 mg of Maxalt tablets in a 24-hour period.
Precautions
Before taking Maxalt, tell your doctor if you
have liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, a heart rhythm
disorder, or coronary heart disease. Do not take Maxalt within 24 hours
before or after using another migraine headache medicine. Do not take
Maxalt if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or
tranylcypromine in the past 14 days.
Contraindications
You should not take Maxalt if you are allergic
to rizatriptan, if you have heart disease, or coronary heart disease,
angina, blood circulation problems, diabetes. Let your doctor know if
you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Most common side effects of Maxalt include:
hives, dizziness, weakness, nausea, blurred vision, paresthesia, chest
pain, dry mouth, difficulty breathing, bloody diarrhea, redness. Stop
using Maxalt and call your doctor at once if you have these side
effects.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you
use, especially: antidepressant (fluoxetine, duloxetine, citalopram),
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine), selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), Ergot medications
(Dihydroergotamine, Pergolide). You should to tell your doctor about any
other medicines you are taking, including prescription and
non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
Missed dose
Since Maxalt is used as needed, it does not have a daily dosing schedule.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine
seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are headache,
confusion, uneven heartbeats, blurred vision, seizure.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between
59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Store
it in a tight container.
